 Price comparison Polish vs. Pakistani

Why salt lamps from Pakistan or India are a lot cheaper than Polish?

The answer is not straight forward and requires to look into many aspects behind the salt and salt lamp making.

However, we feel that the major difference is the labor cost. There are reports showing that in Pakistan and India most of the low cost labor is done by slave workers. Read the reports here.

Salt crystals were not created equal. It all depends on chemical composition of salt rock and the conditions in which it was created million years ago. While Polish salt crystal lamps might seem expensive, there are for sure benefits to that. Just like with everything in this world we can find similar products that vary in price. Now you the customer must make the choice: pay more or less?

We are very confident in the quality of our product. And we know that Polish salt possesses physical and chemical properties that make it a lot more stable and desirable than the salt from Himalayas. These properties allowed us to create such wonders as the world famous Orion Lights that beat everything there is on the market which is made of salt. It is possible to make similar lights form the Himalayan salt however the process will be very labor extensive and the end result will be afar from what we achieved with the salt from Poland.

Let's look at the differences between the salt from Poland and the lamps form Himalayas closer. Most of the lamps from Himalayas come from Pakistan therefore we are going to compare lamps from Poland and lamps from Pakistan.

Polish Salt Lamps vs. Pakistani Salt Lamps

Chemical composition

Polish salt lamps are made from salt that is geologically older and more stable than Pakistani. Polish salt has lesser amounts of sodium, which is responsible for moisture absorption. It is a major difference, not visible by naked eye. This fact is very undesirable for the salt lamp owner. Simply because Pakistani salt lamps will be absorbing and releasing large amounts of moisture. Often people find their Pakistani lamps standing in the pool of water on their favorite furniture.

Mining

Polish salt crystal lamps are made of salt mined traditional way, without a use of explosives, which usually damage the structure of the crystal and distort beneficial vibrations within the atomic structure. We can't say fo0r sure how the Pakistani salt is mined, however we received reports saying that it might be mined using not environmentally sound techniques.

Feel and Look

It is hard to compare something if you don't have it in your hand. However it is possible just by looking at the pictures or education yourself before making any decisions.

Polish salt looks a lot more different than salt from Pakistan. Most of the polish salt lamps have rich apricot color, however the range of colors they come is wider. Pakistani lamps are made of salt that usually has a deep red or faint pink color and have many impurities visible throughout the salt crystal structure.

Finish

Polish salt crystal lamps are made from large chunks of rock salt weighting between 100 and 1000 kg each (220 - 2200 lbs). The salt rocks are then broken down into smaller pieces, according to the desired size of finished lamp. This is the time when the holes for bulbs are drilled in the salt.

Next step involves smaller chunks of salt to be hand chipped to give them the best possible shape and to expose the beauty of the crystal structure. This is the most important step in the manufacturing process as it will define the final look and uniqueness of each lamp. After that the wooden base is mounted and lamps are packed and ready for the shipment.

Pakistani lamps are made using similar techniques with the few exceptions. Many manufacturers may deviate from hand chipping and switch to a lot faster process of water flushing. Lamps that are made using this technique look as if they were made of plastic or as if they were covered with a shiny artificial looking glaze.

Shape

The lamps will look the way the artist will make them. Our lamps are always carefully chipped to give them not only the best look but to give each one of them a unique character. Shape may vary and while some lamps can be tall and narrow, or wide and short, majority will have similar inverted cone shape with surface variances.

Pakistani lamps on the other hand will look very similar to each other, which is especially the truth when the water flushing techniques are used to make them.

Lamp bases

Polish lamps come soft and hardwood bases with the wiring attached to it. And our Orion Lights are set on high grade aluminum bases. Majority of Pakistani lamps come with the hardwood bases attached to the salt crystal and a hole made in the middle of it to fit the bulb. As these descriptions might seem similar, there is only one sure way to compare the bases, which is by seeing them.
